William Harper letter, 16 March 1862.

The collection contains a letter written by Harper with the 47th Indiana at "Knew Madrid" [New Madrid], Missouri to his wife, Lidia, in Wells County, Indiana, 16 March 1862. In his letter he tells of the regiment's engagement at New Madrid and the storming of Fort Thompson.

William Harper was born in Indiana around 1834. In 1861, he was living in Nottingham, Wells County, Indiana, when he enlisted in Company A of the 47th Indiana Regiment. Harper was mustered out of the regiment as a sergeant on 23 October 1865. In 1880, he and his wife, Lidia, were living in Indianapolis where he was working as a cooper.
